RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
