Colombia's President Declares 'I Shall Return to Arms Once More' if US Launches an Attack.

President Trump along with Colombia's president have escalated the rhetoric of their exchange, increasing strains bilaterally after US forces struck Venezuela to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He runs narcotics facilities and processing labs and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Rising Tensions and Claims

Talking to reporters over the weekend, Trump suggested comparable armed intervention against Colombia, stating Colombia is also "very ill" and governed by a sick man who enjoys creating the drug and trafficking it to the US."

Although Colombia is the leading producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication that President Gustavo Petro, the nation's current leader, is personally tied to the illicit industry.

A Strained Alliance

This nation for decades served as a staunch collaborator of the US in the struggle against narcotics trade and enjoyed bipartisan support in the US capital, yet ties have deteriorated significantly since Trump was elected.

Its narcotics trade is mainly overseen by guerrilla factions including one major cartel, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, most of its former fighters laid down arms following a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Strong Rebuttal

When asked if a military operation comparable to Venezuela was on the cards against his country, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the 1990s, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am neither an illegitimate leader and I am not involved in narcotics," he declared.

"Trump speaks uninformed. Cease defaming me," he expressed in a message.

"If US bombs target peasants, they will turn into a multitude of fighters in the hills. And should they arrest the president, which many of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will provoke the ‘jaguar’ of the nation," Petro warned.

From Insurgent to Leader

Petro spent some years as a young man participating of the leftist M-19 armed organization but is not believed to have ever took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he took part in writing the nation's constitution over three decades ago subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá before being elected the presidency.

"I pledged to abstain from using a weapon again ... but for the homeland I would take up the fight," he said.

Increased Security along with Cross-Political Rejection

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Petro's protection team had been reinforced.

Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, but voices spanning Colombian politics have condemned the threats of American military action targeting Colombia.

Political and Economic Pressure

The US revoked his travel authorization following he encouraged American soldiers to ignore orders that violate law. Later, in October, authorities imposed financial sanctions against the president, his spouse and several associates.

Simultaneously while America bolstered its military presence near Venezuela and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted strikes on boats in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
