"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: I also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are far from alone. Several high-profile fans have also petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic bands, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals repeatedly show them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage others to start a band."

"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The group have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The project came out of a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes detail departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That developed toughness demanded a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Legacy

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide following.

But the band will forever be their number one focus.

"We have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
